14 YEARS OLD

Going through the facebook site of my old secondary school I found this photo of me age 14.
Almost ready to go out to work at 15.

Note the black elastic belt all the fashion then and gathered dirndl skirt, lol

Not long after this photo I left school just 15 and started work.
I wonder what happened to all of the others?

I hated school and couldn't wait to leave and get out to work and earn money.
It wasn't to be for long as I met Tom in the first job I had and married him age 17.

What struck me about this photo was how we all look a lot older than 14.
I am 6th from the right.

  1. Great photo! It often seems that people in photos from the mid-sixties and earlier look older than they are. I think people dressed more carefully and maturely then.

  2. As far as I can remember you're the only one that admit that at age 15 you hated school. I hate a school with a passion from the age 14 till the day I graduated from high school. I remember the gathered skirts. Looks like you had double the amount of boys in school as girls which seems strange

  3. I too detested school and couldn't wait to leave. I wish the teachers back then actually took notice of what students were good at. I loved woodwork and metal work so was clearly more a 'hands on' learner than brain of Britain. I loathed maths but loved French.

  4. What a marvelous picture, Briony! And yes... we all were so anxious to be "grown up", weren't we. Now I'd do anything to be 14 again. At least for a little while anyway. I always tell Dan that I'd love to be 18 again too, when him & I were first dating. Those were the most fun & carefree days of my life. Love, Andrea xoxo

  5. Is there not a facebook group for the school? There is for mine, although the now defunct Friends Reunited was much better.

  6. So you are front and center? Everyone is dressed so nice! I could not wait to go out and work either. And I, as well, met Phil shortly after my first job. I never went back.

  7. Hi just read you comment on my blog saying that you couldn't get back to the old blogger template. if you to go the very top of your blog and click Design it will take you to page where you can view posts etc. Look at the left hand side you will see a list, posts, stats, comments and so on. At the bottom it will say Revert to Legacy Blogger, click this and it will take you back to the old blogger.
    Hope that helps :-)

  9. I love photos from the past; it doesn't matter if I know the people in them or not. You really do look more than 14. Some kids mature faster than others. My mom mostly taught Grade 9, which here would be ages 14-15, and she always said there was such a variety. Some kids were still "kids", others were close to being adults.
