CHRISTMAS CHICKEN 1950's

 Here I go again, looking back at the past. lol

This time it's the Christmas dinner of the 1950's.

My Uncle had a very large garden and kept chickens. Back in the 50's chicken was quite expensive and unless you reared your own it wasn't a meat that was eaten freely.
Lamb and Pork were the meats that we ate most so when my Uncle used to come down to see us before Christmas with a chicken we thought we'd won the jackpot. lol
 
 
Only one problem. The chicken came fully feathered and with all insides present. 
Mum and I used to sit in the scullery (very small kitchen) and pluck the thing and I can tell you we had sore fingers after a while.
Then Mum would gut it and prepare it for cooking.
But, that chicken tasted lovely.
Free range, fed only decent food and not and injection anywhere.

  1. For some unknown reason I can smell that chicken being gutted...no idea why, I have never gutted a chicken in my life! Perhaps my mother did though don't remember her doing so. ( Glad I have finished my breakfast)

  2. My Mum was occasionally given presents of pheasants which I remember having the same process dome to them. I think that is one of the reasons I became a vegetarian - seeing dead birds hanging up, or in various stages of preparation was not a happy experience for me!
    However, I am all in favour of free range animals having a life. Also, in more frugal times, all of the animal was used and there was minimal waste, unlike today. I remember we had roast dinner on Sunday and then it would be cottage pie, or some other meal on Monday or Tuesday, to use up the meat.

  3. Well I love chicken but I think if I had to pluck it and gut it before I could cook it I might have a different view of it...lol

  5. we were the opposite here in USA in the 50's. chicken was the cheapest meal we could buy. hamburger was also cheap, I have never tasted lamb even to this day.. we could not afford anything but the burger/chicken. my dad decide to raise chickens to eat, because he grew our food. i cried so long and refused to eat the first one he killed, after the 5 were gone he bought the chickens. i cried every time my granmother wrung the neck of the chicken, plucked and singed the feathers. i can still smell that smell and when I cook chicken I can't stand the smell or eat it... if some one else cooks it i do better.

  6. I remember my grandmother raising chickens in a pen in her back garden in the 1950's. She was a sweet, refined little lady who always wore a hat and gloves to church and carried an embroidered hankie. But when it came to making chicken dinner, she could chop those heads off and gut and pluck with the best of butchers. I guess in those days you did what you had to to put food on the table.

    Glad we can buy chicken cleaned and packaged at the grocery!

  7. We always had goose, straight from the farm, the bird was delivered and mum had to get it ready for cooking, the inners always went into the gravy.

  8. I'm with Ann... I'd never eat it if I had to pluck & gut it. But that's the truth = those chickens from your uncle's farm lived a lot better of a life than the factory farm chickens. Of course, in the 1950s I'm guessing animal husbandry wasn't nearly as horrid as it is now. Another reason that life was much better in the olden days. ~Andrea xoxo

  9. When we were little my Irish grandmother would send us a big brown paper parcel containing presents and an enormous homegrown Turkey 🦃. Lovely Christmas dinner memories Briony.

  11. My parents raised chicken and later Max and I raised chicken, turkeys and ducks on our 6 ace property. I well remember the smell when gutting them. They were left a day or two from gutting to cooking and tasted delicious.)

  12. I bought an extra large chicken from Lidl last week. It cost me £3.60 but it may have been fed on cheap soya bean feed from Brazil. The environmental costs of the things we eat is never made crystal clear. I also bought some extra fine beans from Egypt. Crazy.
