If you remember, we have new neighbours next door. They have been in now for a couple of months and are really lovely people, phew, thank goodness..
I approached them about the seagulls and explained that I put out a small amount of food for them each day and asked if they were okay with that,
the reason being that the gulls feed on the wall that surrounds their garden.
They said that they didn't mind at all, in fact the lady was also putting a few bits on the window ledge for them.
Luckily we do not have large window sills like next door, when we had a renovation they were replaced with tiny one's.
But as you can see the original large one's are perfect for a seagull to perch on.
Now, we all know that seagulls are very, very clever birds and when this one spies the owner in his office (I found out that he is an Author) https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/215041.Stuart_Blackburn he duly stands on the sill and beats out a tattoo on the window until the owner opens up and puts out a few bits.
I'm not sure how he puts up with this as it would drive me crazy but I have asked a couple of times if he would like me to stop feeding them and he assures me its okay.
that would drive me nuts, pecking on the window. but it is really a cute shot.. down here we beg people not to feed the gulls, especially at the beaches. they are terrible thieves at the beach and will swoop down and take food off a blanket or out of a hand, and hundreds of them screaming and flying and pooping is a mess. the resturants that have outdoor tables have signs every where about not feeding them because they are pest. they string wires across the tops to keep them out.
ReplyDeleteHa-ha! That's pretty funny to have a seagull come begging. Glad the neighbors are feathered friend friendly. :)
ReplyDeleteI thought to myself...My, it looks like the gull is tapping on the window for food. And it turns out he IS!!! What a great picture! How many are they, and are they there year round? Is there water close?
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of gulls around as we are near the sea but we only get two calling, well, three now as they have a baby. As soon as the baby is independent they will not be calling so often but in the Spring they remember and come back. I know a lot of people do not like them but they are magnificent birds close up and we are priveliged to get really close to them.
DeleteNo gulls here, but we have a songbird feeder, and when the feeder is empty, they sit on my windowsill and look at me meaningfully. They know I watch them.
ReplyDeleteMost of the houses we built when living in Wyoming were made of logs. Flickers--related to woodpeckers--are large colorful birds who feed on insects which they find in dead trees. Apparently some of them considered log buildings to be fair game. My grandson complained that he was awakened nearly every morning by a flicker outside his bedroom window bashing away on the wall!
ReplyDeleteHerring Gulls have a bad reputation. I love them. They are so intelligent and such posers, and unlike most scavengers are very clean. The town I live near does not have a problem with them whereas the next town the natives constantly complain about them. Weird.
ReplyDeleteI overheard my neighbour calling them rats on wings the other day, I just do not understand people, they don't look any further than their noses at all the beautiful wild life we have around us.
DeleteI love your gull photos and never get fed up with seeing them.
That is pretty funny that the seagull begs at the window for food. He looks like a peeping tom at the window like that
ReplyDeleteI find that most wildlife will 'come begging' if the need arises and if people are accommodating... whether it be birds, feral cats, raccoons, etc. We find no problem with feeding them on occasion although many others don't like the idea. Some consider it a nuisance, but we consider it 'sharing' the space. Now we do understand that sharing with bears or other dangerous wildlife would not be smart...
ReplyDeleteLokks like someone knows what side their bread is buttered - your wish is my command says the author!
ReplyDeleteWhere we live would be about an hour and a half drive to any coastline yet when the trucks arrive at the tip/dump you can't see the ground for gulls of one sort or another. They seem to survive on a varied diet - not just fish lol
And yes the coastal towns all have signs saying please don't feed the seagulls.
We have seagull in our garden......they sit on the bird feeder!

Yes neighbour feeds the birds but it's always seagull's who get to the food first. At least she puts the food at the bottom of the garden now because her conservatory like mine was getting cr@pped on from a great hight and not just a little bit!!!! I never said anything but I think her husband did.
ReplyDeleteI don`t know they say humans are the clever ones but some animals put us to same like this clever seagull, cats also amaze me hoe thy learn so quickly whereas I forget sot things these days. I feed the blackbirds they expect an apple everyday and if I put grapes out they go mad for them and leave the apple till the grapes have all gone. Better fed than me!
ReplyDeletehahaha, that is one smart gull indeed.
ReplyDeleteHa! Seagulls are so DEMANDING. I remember, when I went to Istanbul a couple of years ago, one sat on the windowsill of the hotel breakfast room each morning and did pretty much the same thing -- demand food!
ReplyDeleteI saw on Sky News this morning that a town in England is going to fine people that feed seagulls! I trust it's not your town.
ReplyDeleteNo Jane, not here but I wouldn't be surprised if they do eventually. The thing is that there is a shortage of fish in the sea and it drives them inland to forage.
