We were able to go and bring Rupert home late this afternoon.
This was the culprit, the vet saved it to show us.
It was stuck 1/3rd of the way down the intestines.
Back to the vet again tomorrow for a post op check, (free) I should think so too. lol
Here he is, not a very good photo, I didn't want to bother him.
We are now £1,500 worse off but it could have been worse.
We warned the vet that he had to keep the cost down as we only had so much cash, and he did his best.
Apparently this could happen again so we shall be liberal with the hair ball paste and he will be eating more soft and less biscuits, plus we will be buying the hair ball biscuits.
We are both wiped out having been to and fro to the vets literally every day this week bar Monday..

That looks really packed tight, no wonder poor fellow couldn't hack it up. We feed wet food twice a day and give dry kibble between, and our cats hardly ever have hairballs. On the other hand, they are both short-haired and Rupert is not. I hope the new regimen helps him. Poor fellow. I bet he is relieved to be at home, matched only by your relief at having him home. That price tag stunned me. That is a lot of money.
ReplyDeleteSo glad he is alright! You both need to go into serious nap mode! Neither Phil nor I had any idea that a fur ball can get stuck in the intestine. Good thing you are up on prevention!

ReplyDeleteOh so glad that he is home,I really felt for you cause its such a worry.E think next time round,Im going to train to be a vet..or a lawyer,cause it seems to me that they can just charge what they like!!.My Tiggy was sick a couple of weeks ago and he brought up something that looked like that...I thought that he had eaten a slug!!.I didnt realise it was a fur ball.So I will keep my eye out for that in future.Briony,what is the hair ball paste and biscuits?.It maybe something that I should get.Im just so relieved that he is home,xx
ReplyDeleteI got my paste from the vet but you can buy it in the pet shop. The biscuits apparently have something in them to help move the fur along. I'll try anything rather than go through that again.

DeleteSo happy that Rupert is home and on the mend. I've found what I thought were some large hairballs around here, but none compared to that one! Poor guy. It certainly is expensive having pets. Owning a pet is a real financial commitment. Hope you can relax and rest up a little now.
ReplyDeleteRubber gloves and stroke. You may already know this, gets rid of loads of loose hair on both long and short haired cats. Glad he survived although your pocket got a big hit.
ReplyDeleteI did read that a rubber spikey glove works, looked at them in the pet shop today, £12.99, think I'll try that rubber glove thanks for the tip.
DeleteYou can buy cheap, very efficient versions at Poundland (or the like). So glad that lovely boy is better... They are what make all the other problems in life bearable. Just seeing their cool approach to daily existence makes me relax...and laugh! xx

So pleased Rupert is home. Luckily Kim is short haired and I have had no trouble with hairballs but I must have done with Kath and I know I have some paste.

ReplyDeleteOh Christ on a bike! No pet insurance? I feel for you Briony - I really do. They never deal with the presentation of extortionate bills in those lovely vet programmes on the TV.
ReplyDeleteWe had them all insured at one time YP but every year the cost went up disproportionately and we decided to just save the money. That's fine until you have a couple of them go down as with Princess and the broken leg last year and now this, so we are starting over with the savings again. I get a bit angry with the exorbitant costs but what can you do, they know that we would do anything for our pets.

DeleteBriony, you may be able to substitute vegetable oil for the paste and it might be better accepted by Rupert. Check with your vet (or maybe call a couple of other vets to get an unbiased opinion!) but that is what we were told years ago for a long-haired cat.

ReplyDeleteWow, that was one hell of a bill! Glad he's better now, these pets do give us nearly as much worry as love don't they? Betty (our dog) has a recurring yeasty ear infection because of the size and shape of her ears, we have to take her to the vets every couple of months or so....not covered by insurance, of course!
ReplyDeleteOh lordy, that's a big 'un. I will have to keep my eye on Oscar, he looks similar to Rupert. He eats mainly wet food, with a bit of dry. That's a whopping big bill, but after paying insurance for Bugsy for 15 years and never making a claim, I now put the money aside and have enough to pay for emergencies.

I'm glad Rupert is OK. That hairball is huge! I give my cat (Punkerpuss) about a tablespoon of canned pumpkin with her wet food. No dry food. Between that and brushing her almost everyday she rarely has a hairball. Before that routine she was throwing up hairballs all the time.

ReplyDeleteWow! That is quite a fur ball! I wonder how cats in the wild deal with fur balls? Maybe they don't get such large ones, not being fancy long-haired cats. Anyway, quite a scare. I'm glad to see in your subsequent post that he's feeling better.
