CAUGHT OUT IN WAITROSE.

The pain in my hip and every other place I can think of require me to take some kind of pain killer.
I don't like taking them regularly and so on the days I leave them off I hobble. lol

I have tried many different kinds but have found paracetamol are as good as any and a bit less harmful than some of the others.

Today we went into the shop and picked up 3 packets of paracetamol.
We were told at the checkout that the law says that we can only buy 2 packets at a time, so Tom took the other packet to another checkout to buy on his behalf.
Oh dear, we were made to feel like criminals as the checkout girl had told the supervisor that we were getting more than 2 packs with the pack that Tom was buying on another checkout and we were stopped and treated like shoplifters.

I explained that I could go to every shop in town and buy 2 packets thus if I wanted to commit suicide I could and the law would never know how many packs I had bought, but we had to give the third pack back and scuttle out of the shop like criminals.

-----------------------

With that over  we drove to the pet shop to buy cat biscuits and while Tom was in the shop I noticed a pigeon flying about in the empty 'Toys R Us' store next door.
We had a look to see if we could see where it got in or where it might be able to get out and found nowhere.

We went into the pet shop and they couldn't car less about a pigeon and so as soon as we got home I was on the phone to RSPCA and RSPB.
Trying to get through on the phone to talk to a person was impossible.  I was passed from here to there and in the end gave up.
So much for their emergency number.
In the end I rang a wild life man here in Brighton and he said he would see what he could do.
In the meantime, I dare not go anywhere near the shop as its so upsetting watching this poor bird continually flying at the windows trying to get out and hope my wildlife man can do something.

Oh what a day !!

  1. Sounds most upsetting - hope the pigeon got away.

  2. We regularly buy 2 packets of paracetamol each at 2 different tills. How ridiculous and upsetting to be treated like a criminal! Don't they have better things to do?

I hope someone does go and let the poor pigeon out.

  3. Honestly, people can buy all sorts of things without limitation. And seeing as you are two separate individuals, it would seem that you could buy two and Tom could be two without question. Makes no sense at all. Poor bird. Sure hope someone helps out. Take care!

  4. I never knew there were limits on paracetamol. I wonder if it's limited in the same way in the states?

As for the pigeon, I think I might have "accidentally" broken the window!

    2. Please don't call suicide 'topping yourself'. Suicide affects thousands of families each year, I know, I'm one of them. My dad killed himself with a paracetamol overdose. It was a horrible tragedy, not something to be referred to in that way. Incidentally, I don't think a ban on selling larger amounts of the drug would have stopped him.

  6. I don't think paracetamol is limited here. We get it on a regular prescription - 200 tablets (the first 20 prescriptions per family per year cost $5 each then free except a surcharge on some medicines). How terrible to be made to feel like a criminal.

I do hope someone saves the pigeon.

  7. Good grief! I'm quite sure there's no limit on acetaminophen (your Paracetamol) here in Canada. How ridiculous, using the exact logic you used.

I do hope your wildlife man is able to rescue the pigeon. It's very hard to watch and not be able to help. And so many people just don't see it as a priority the way the rest of us do.

I hope tomorrow is an easier day for you.

  8. I'm not familiar with that type of pain reliever but how horrible that they put a limit on how much you can buy. There was certainly no excuse for them treating you poorly either.

Hope someone is able to help that poor bird. We had one in our store a while back and the manager had a heck of a time getting it out.

  9. I've had the same experience and said the same thing. If i was really hell bent on killing myself I could go yo every shop, chemist and buy two packs.

  10. Two packets of pain killers, whatever they are, has been the law for many years. My husband gets two packets of Extra Strong Paracetamols for me every week, which is fine, but sometimes there isn't any stock on the shelves. Ordinary Paracetamols aren't strong enough for the pain I have so he has to go to other supermarkets searching for the Extra Strong.

It is distressing to see birds trying to find an opening, sometimes injuring themselves in the process. We had a small bird in our conservatory last week, but with the outside door open my husband was able to show him/her the way out..

  11. I live in the US and that product is unfamiliar to me but we have others like that. I asked about why and I was told the drug dealers use certain ones to create another drug that is very harmful and they need more than 2 packs to do this with and wonder if this is true but that is what I was told.

  12. Oh my goodness. What a way to treat seniors! I have taken many pain relievers, but never heard of this one. I am looking it up. I hope you have an update on the bird tomorrow.

  13. i had to ask google what your pain reliever is and was shocked to find it is our Tylenol, which is over the counter and can buy what ever we want. i buy it for Bob in a bottle of 100, i think it comes in a bottle of 200. did not know it could kill, but i looked that up and it can. only narcotics are regulated here. when i take it it does the same thing as drinking water. but it helps bob. i buy ibuprofen a bottle of 100 and your meds for him. what it comes down to is all the meds that make us feel better can injure or kill us if abused.. i agree with the comment above, the store is protecting themselves. the narcotics here that we can only buy a limited supply of, we have to use our drivers license, and if you go to another store, they run the license and we can't buy it. that is to keep people from buying it to make homemade meth... our world is crazy. sorry you are in pain.... about the exits. i looked for exits for fire purposes after i saw the shooting at the store. it made me think if i had to get out because it caught fire, how would i know...

  14. How ridiculous. There were two of you so shouldn't that mean you can buy two packets each? The world is so full of rules and regulations these days that people can't apply common sense. Oh, that poor bird. You did everything you could to help, I just hope that it managed to get out.

  15. I believe shops are fined if they are found to be selling more than the allowed amount, so that would explain why.

  16. In the days when I over-wintered in Brighton, I used to regularly 'stock-up' on certain painkillers before leaving for France. I knew about the silly rules, so would do a tour of all the central chemist shops until I had enough. Do they imagine that people don't do that? Another case of 'Jobsworth'.

  17. I would never shop there again if it happened to me.

  18. Regarding the paracetamol issue. Waitrose should give you an apology and a shopping voucher for causing you that embarrassment and annoyance. There were TWO individual shoppers - yourself and Tom. You may be married but you are individual people and Tom was legally entitled to his own quota of the pills. The checkout employee was just being spiteful. Disgraceful!

  19. I think I would find a new pharmacy to do business with if there is one close by and convenient. I agree that both of you should have been able to buy your "quotas." As a reader said above, you can buy bottles of 500 acetaminophen (same as your paracetamol) here over the counter. I just looked them up on Amazon. A bottle of 500 extra-strength tablets can be delivered to you in 2 days for just under seven USdollars. Could your doctor write you a prescription to cover the tablets? And that poor pigeon. I'm with you - I just can't stand to see an innocent animal or bird suffering. I hope your wildlife man could help!

  21. I had to look up "Paracetamol" and my searching said that Paracetamol is the brand name of our "Tylenol" in the USA. I wonder if this is true? There's nothing in Tylenol that should be restricted, I wouldn't think. Interesting. At any rate, my body hurts too. I'm so sorry we both feel like this. Love, Andrea xoxo

  22. I am 29 years old and have been diagnosed with breast cancer, ease of treatment and a similar story, except for my first acceptance as a rejection of herbal medicine. I was not part of the Perseid movement and did not really build relationships with any of them, I just believed in their operation. I say this because it was during the use of Dr. Itua herbal medicine that I now attest that herbal medicine is real, the phytotherapy Dr. Itua heal my breast cancer which I suffered for 2 years. Dr. Itua herbal medicine is made of natural herbs, with no side effects, and easy to drink.
