we are shocked at what we see on the curbs here, perfectly good and usual things, just tossed because they see something else to replace it.
I hope and believe that attitudes to waste are changing. Extinction Rebellion are part of that reawakening. We need to reuse and recycle and where possible avoid buying new - just like our grandparents' generation!
Agreed, we still have our Ercol table and chairs that we had when we married, also I have the same ironing board I've just recovered it from time to time. My home is full of recycled stuff and visitors comment on how nice it looks. No need for new all the time.
We should be proud about upcycling and getting years out of the things we buy. New is not always best.
So many people find wonderful treasures that have been put out for trash. I never see anything good. Maybe I need to look harder
Our landfill no longer lets people forage for treasures. Everything is immediately crushed and covered. But people, including us, put things out along the road for anyone to take and reuse. I've found some really nice things that way. And it's fun! Zip does get a bit frustrated when I yell 'wait, I saw a cute chair back there!!!' ha-ha!
Same here Pat, it's a crime the things I see just being thrown in the containers. We do have a charity shop on site but they only take certain things. I think if I were younger I could make a living from what people put outside their houses around here. It's a very transient area and so there are always goodies to be had. Hope you are both keeping okay, we are still bumbling around here. xx
That pic did make me smile, thanks! And it's us all over too, we have loads of stuff that we've acquired (bought very cheaply 2nd hand, been given or just picked up) and repurposed/remade.
I was going to go to the tip today, but I've spent that much time talking to every Tom Dick and Harry on my walk around the village, I no longer have time. Must get organised for tomorrow.
I can really get depressed by going into a store that sells (for example) housewares, and think about how all this new stuff is going to replace old but perfectly serviceable stuff, and then in a couple of years, or less, the same people are going to buy more new stuff to replace the stuff they're buying today. Gah. Luckily for my sanity I rarely have to be anywhere near those stores. But they're still there, and people are still buying indiscriminately . . .
I have to laugh love the story, we would get along great! My mom used to say when I would go to the dump with my dad, "Don't let your father come home with anything! Dad and I had a great time:)
Too funny! But also true!
We used to have a group on the internet for this area called "Freecycle," but it doesn't exist any longer. It was great because if you needed something you could check to see if anyone was getting rid of what you needed. Then you could post things you no longer needed that someone else could use. I don't know why they stopped it because it seemed quite popular.
We have this here Sue. They are always asking for administrators and I am guessing that as it is voluntary they maybe have a job to fill the people who run it.
It's amazing what people throw out these days, more money than sense, and no consideration for the environment either. Many congratulations to your granddaughter, what a clever girl. She's obviously been working very hard and it's paid off.
Love that pic.. sums me up too! Only yesterday I saw a perfectly good laundry basket which had been chucked into our communal rubbish bins; unf by the time I went back to the bin to heave it out, the binmen had done their emptying. What a waste, I would have been more than happy to have it. We are no longer allowed to leave useable things beside the bins for folk to take - there's a £200fine by the 'litter-police' who do indeed come around - we're supposed to have a loud&proud recycling Council, shameful. (thx for letting me rant!!)
Rant away Gillian, I do all of the time. I wonder what happens to all of our rubbish when it is taken away, I would love to be a fly on the wall and follow it to its end, probably litters up another country somewhere,
my mum still has her utility tallboy. You needed coupons to get furniture after the war. It was expected that the wooden furniture you got when you were married would last for most of your life. She only got rid of her wardrobe when a "built in " one was made for her. Still has 2 of her original dining chairs as well. People appreciated things back then.
If only I was younger and had a big empty garage I could make a fortune at car boots with other peoples rubbish. lol
Me too!! I have to make myself keep going!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have to take a deep breath and walk away, I could come home with more than I am disposing off .... and all mine is definitely junk and no further use to anyone otherwise it would have been given away.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.... me too, although I'm in somewhat "control" these days, since we're trying to clean out. But it's hard. *haha* Love, Andrea xoxo
I am 29 years old and have been diagnosed with breast cancer, ease of treatment and a similar story, except for my first acceptance as a rejection of herbal medicine. I was not part of the Perseid movement and did not really build relationships with any of them, I just believed in their operation. I say this because it was during the use of Dr. Itua herbal medicine that I now attest that herbal medicine is real, the phytotherapy Dr. Itua heal my breast cancer which I suffered for 2 years. Dr. Itua herbal medicine is made of natural herbs, with no side effects, and easy to drink.
