NOT BEING PROUD

My hip is really playing up and as after talking to several people about hip replacement surgery I have decided that it's not for me.
But, its is very painful sometimes.
I can take pain killers but really they only take the edge off of the pain and I am not in favour of taking pills long term unless necessary.
I took a look on youtube and found some advice from a couple of physiotherapists who advocate using a walking stick as a good option for taking the strain off of the hip.

So, not one for doing things by halves and thinking that if I have to use a stick I'll have something a bit swish.
Here is my chosen helper.
A cheetah patterned fold up one.
Useful for all kinds of things, like pointing things out, to giving an unruly husband a few taps to get him in order, lol

I didn't think it would come to this and really it's only been pride that has stopped me from getting one before, but if it helps me to walk upright and takes the strain it's worth it.

  1. My mum (94) has just been to the doctor and the doctor said she thought it was her hip causing her problems rather than her knees. Sadly she was knocked off her feet by a four year old on a scooter 3 years ago in a shopping precinct and went crashing to the floor on this hip and arthritis has set in. She gave way and started using a stick a while ago and the the doctor now advises a walking frame....as yet that is a step too far for my mum!! But it would no doubt help her.

  2. Very swish! And just the sort of thing I'd choose if (when) the time comes for me to use one....probably not that far off seeing as my hips are getting worse too. My sis has MS and has a variety of brightly coloured, flowered and patterned sticks, she changes them to match her outfits.

  4. Whatever it take to ease the pain, I would choose a fancy one too :-)
Just as a matter of interest, I've just started taking a Turmeric supplement after doing some reading on how turmeric can benefit people who suffer with arthritis. It is a natural anti inflammatory and according to what I've read in some case works better than anti inflammatory drugs. I've started taking it because I have problems with my knee. Might be worth you considering?

  5. I bought two canes a few years ago, a lavender one with white flowers and a brown one with horses on it. I also added an appropriate colored silk tassel to each. Darn, if you gotta use one, it should be stylish! I like yours! Classy choice. I don't use mine all the time, but when the old hip gets to acting up, it sure comes in handy.

  6. love the pattern, and good idea to get one.. I have several friends, all had a good hip surgery, 3 good and 1 bad. two of them said they wish they had done it sooner. one was walking normaly in 6 days. just putting info out there... yesterday on TV they swowed local classes for Seniors to learn how to use their canes as weapons is someone tries to harm them while out. I can send you instructions on how to harm someone with your new cane if you need it. 😁

  8. That is a very stylish stick! Good choice! Hopefully you won't need it much but it's good to have something in reserve.

  9. I have a stick, not as stylish as yours, but it did the job. Apart from painful hips my problem with MS is balance and when the balance starts to get worse (which it has) using a stick isn't any good. I have a zimmer frame, coutesy of the NHS in Wales, which I now use at home as I need stability, which a stick doesn't give.

  10. You could get shots in your hip, they really help. A pain doctor is the very best for this kind of thing. They know things about controlling chronic pain that other doctors do not. I am so thankful for mine. What an adorable cane!!

  12. Very stylish, I hope the new stick helps Briony.
A local lady here had a hip replacement 12 months ago and wishes she had never bothered, she is in more pain now than before which is so sad. On the other hand, my hairdresser had the op after having gold injections and she says its changed her life for the better.

  14. Yes it's a good idea and I would definitely use one.I used one for a few days when my hip was painful and occasionally have used one indoors when my legs go weak x

  15. Very stylish. My late husband had a hip replacement and it was great. Mind you, the pain was in his knee but, apparently, caused by the hip.

  16. I had to laugh when I read this as my mom had a cane (94)... and used it to point at things... or people. She was a bit dangerous with that thing.

  17. That cane is really rather swish. As soon as my leg is strong enough for me to switch from a crutch to a cane I am planning on having a loud one. I had reached the point where the pain was agonizing and a hip replacement was the only option. Please don't let my experience put you off. It was a very rare and unlucky for me situation

  18. My 88 year old Mom just hates to use her cane. She claims that it gets in her way and she's afraid she'll trip over it. But her neurologist said it gives another message to her brain that helps with keeping her balance, so I encourage her to use it whenever I can. Hers is similar to yours with a small flowered pattern and a nice squishy gel handle. I love your cheetah print!

  20. As Maggie said.....it might be worth trying a turmeric supplement. I started on them around 6 months ago. My thumbs were beginning to hurt...picking up the kettle and the iron was getting painful, and all that has gone now! My knee is a lot easier than it was too. I am using " Nutravita" organic turmeric with ginger and black pepper. 1440mg per serving ( thats 2 capsules per day)....black and orange coloured packaging . I get them from Amazon......so much cheaper than a health food shop! You need to take them for a couple of months to feel a difference. Worth a try?

  21. Sorry to hear about your hip pain Briony. Pain can easily overwhelm people so that ordinary thoughts are driven away as pain dominates their thinking. Your new walking stick looks very cool though I doubt that you can run like a cheetah!

    1. A result of old age and working two allotments in the past probably, all that digging, lol.
Not to worry, we both try to laugh at these things, we're both a couple of crocks but as long as I can sew and crochet and Tom can do his jigsaws and tapestry we are fine.
I've seen too many disastrous hip ops to consider one.

  22. My mother-in-law used to use her stick to poke our cat while saying psssshhhht when she thought we weren't looking. She didn't like them.
