Sitting having a cup of tea in the kitchen this morning I glanced across to the worktop and saw the bag of crisps that I bought for Tom yesterday, he's partial to a few crisps. lol
On the bag was printed 'Hand Cooked'
Having a wild imagination I am seeing lines of workers peeling and thinly slicing potatoes ready for another line of workers standing in front of many deep fat fryers getting ready to cook them.
Isn't that hand cooked?
I doubt it.
So what exactly do they mean when they put 'hand cooked' on the packet?
Any ideas?
It will not stop him from enjoying them but things like this puzzle me.
No wonder I can't sleep well at night, lol
I have to say that that's a question I've never pondered before, lol. I am partial to a bag of crisps though!
ReplyDeleteOh that's easy to explain. The chief fryer at the Waitrose crisp factory is a fellow called Israel Hands. He was once a pirate on the seven seas. It should read "Hands Cooked" but Waitrose printers managed by Blackbeard made a mistake. lol
ReplyDeleteP.S. Are we allowed to say Blackbeard nowadays?
Now I will ponder the question all afternoon. Perhaps its done by robots.........

I think Waitrose must have a little old woman with a chip pan cooking each and every packet of crisps. It's remarkable service.
ReplyDeleteFound this after a quick Google search Briony: What does hand-cooked mean? The revival of hand-cooked crisps, brought about by the Kettle brand in 1982, brought back the human element to frying. It describes crisps that cannot be fried by automated machinery because they are not washed or blanched and the skin is left on.2 Apr 2005

I hope you can sleep at night now! x
Thanks Simone.
DeleteAh, the mysteries of the world. I don't care who cooked them or what flavour they are. I will eat them all. My absolute downfall is a packet of crisps.
ReplyDeleteWho knows. It's just marketing baloney!
ReplyDeleteOh my word I had to Google it and there is an answer out there but if anybody wants to know what it is just Google what is and cook. I am on my phone and it's too hard to copy and paste! They sound delicious and now I know what hand-cooked is
ReplyDeleteI sure hope they don't dip their HANDS in the fryer. I have it pictured that way now that you brought it to my attention! rofl
ReplyDeleteIn either case, I will join in some munching ...but,hey, don't lose any sleep over it.
I've often remarked they are about as much hand cooked as my aunt Bessies Yorkshire's!
ReplyDeleteThat's what I thought but I do love Aunt Bessies stuff.
DeleteYummy .... they sound like my kind of crisp. We ordered a bag of Tyrells for our weekend treat.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely weekend x
Haha so funny, I'm glad the mystery has been solved, I could just eat some right now.
ReplyDeleteCherie beat me to it - I can't have any sort of them around - they just disappear (into my stomach). lol Glad Simone and Google solved the mystery.
ReplyDelete*haha* Yes, "hand cooked" would be a puzzle to me too. What ever do they mean??!! It might be similar to the thing my granddaughter said to me, when she was little. I was refilling one of those plastic ice cube trays, to put it in the freezer, and she said: "Gee, Grandma.... I think it's so neat that you even make homemade ice cubes!!" :-D :-D Love, Andrea xoxo
ReplyDeleteKids can say some lovely things sometimes can't they? My little Grandson asked me what those handles were on my shoes once, they were hourglass kitten heels, I've never forgotten it, so sweet.
DeleteYou are so right, what DOES it mean????
ReplyDeleteWell I would have been wondering the same thing but I see someone has looked it up and has the answer
ReplyDeleteYes I wonder what it means, at other times I think if asked Waitrose would be pleased to explain.. bet they were nice!
ReplyDeleteWho knew???? My answer would be clever advertising getting you to pay a few pence more...I could just eat a nice packet of crisps right now.
