Yesterday we decided to go shopping in the evening, this avoids queuing and there are less people.
I despair at what is happening to people over this virus.
I see from my window people taking detours out into the road to avoid walking close to others and last night in the supermarket an old lady queuing at the till in front of us was told off by the person in front and asked to move back.
This lady was in fact well within the distance but the person still wanted her further away.
She turned to us in a quite distressed state saying that she was the correct distance away and I know that this will have affected this old lady for the rest of the evening and possibly again when she shops.
The complainer then carried it on and complained to the cashier who I'm pleased to say remained neutral.
What on earth is happening to us all?
There will no doubt always be complainers but this lady struck me as the kind who would pick up the phone and snitch. Another wonderful suggestion from the government.
How hateful.
p.s. I notice the shelves were very short again as people are 'stocking' up.
This is sad and how unpleasant for you to see this!! Fear produces these situations!! Humans are at their worse when they feel insecure and they become much more aggressive and intolerant. This is the result of the pandemic and all what we have to put up with. There is nothing clear about it all. The message we get from the authorities varies and changes so often and there is as yet no real solution. This makes people feel unsettled and very uneasy! I do not mean just in the UK but everywhere. Under no circumstances am I condoning that woman's behaviour far from it but it is a result of what we are living at the moment. I can well imagine how upset that poor lady was...doing the right thing but being picked on like that!! Bullies do not just exist in schools!! Amanda x
ReplyDeleteOh Briony - we think we are civilized and it turns out to be only a veneer. I feel so sorry for that elderly lady whom you describe. We all have somewhere in life we need help not bitchiness (with me it's digital technology - even the TV defeats me these days) and often its such a blindspot that no amount of 'teaching' will fix it. We just need someone to understand, empathize, be gentle, be polite - hugs seem to be out of the question. I just tell myself those bitchy people have truly miserable lives - and privately genuinely hope that they have miserable lives in spades. I'm no saint, I'll bring down curses on all their houses for being mean. Random acts of kindness go so much further.
ReplyDeleteI don't see it getting any better as more restrictions are been imposed. This terrible pandemic seems to have bought the best out in some but sadly the worst out in others.
ReplyDeleteThis crisis - as all crises do - is bringing out the best and sadly the worst in people. Like you, I feel badly for that elderly lady who was on the receiving end. And confrontation tends to make these kinds of things worse. The loud obnoxious people get even louder and more obnoxious.
ReplyDeleteOh, that poor lady. Yes, there's a lot of frayed tempers out there at the moment.
ReplyDeleteIt is about to get worse again, USA just passed the 200,000 mark in deaths and 5 of our states are on a rapid upswing. the ones that are NOT wearing mask and NOT standing 6 feet apart. you are right, the pandemic has brought out the BAD instead of the good.
ReplyDeleteI was on the register at work the other day and the customer was standing way back writing out her check. She was using her leg to write on so she could stay back away from me. While she was writing I started to put her bagged groceries back in her cart. She backed up even further even though there was plenty of space between us.. I know some won't agree with this but I think if you are that afraid of someone getting slightly within your 6 feet you should consider not going out and sending someone else to do the shopping for you.
ReplyDeleteI wish the old lady had been a judo black belt then she could have thrown the complainer to the floor. I always wear a mask in shops and it really pisses me off when I see people wandering around without masks. By the way I can understand entirely if Tom chooses not to wear a mask. That is different.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, this poor lady. People are even getting not fist fights because of masks. Oh no, time to stock up on toilet paper again!!
ReplyDeleteHow awful and yes you are right that will have spoilt that ladies day and she will dwell on it for ages. There will always be some very ignorant stupid people the best thing to do is just let it go over your head. I have just been to Aldi and the shelves were stocked there I hope people ae not going to be so stupid as to start stockpiling again.
