AMBER'S JOB INTERVIEWS

Amber my Granddaughter came to see us last week as she is home from Uni for the Easter.

She is on the final run of a three year stint and is actively looking for work.

I didn't realise quite how difficult it is for these young enthusiastic kids to get a job these days.

Apart from the fact that there a many people all after the same job when you get there, it is a whole day of interviews, exams and working for several hours on the spot to show how you perform.

All this and a scant chance that you might get the job and if you don't, going all over it again and again with different employers.

I recently had my groceries delivered by a lovely young boy who told me that he had finished Uni with a degree and just could not find a job. He had had to take this job to fill in until he was able to find something more suitable to his knowledge.

How soul destroying for these young people who are told to work hard in order to get a good job only to end doing something menial not connected to their studies.

When I was young all you had to do was buy a newspaper and browse the job column, pick a job you fancied and apply.   Nine out of ten times you just went for the interview and got the job.

How times have changed.

  3. Good luck to Amber in her job hunting. It must be very frustrating for youngsters who work so hard for their degrees to then not find suitable jobs. Times certainly have changed.

  5. From what you describe it sounds like something from the TV programme 'The Apprentice'. There are so many hoops they have to jump through these days. I think an alternative to Uni might be to look for an apprenticeship, start studying with a company that values it's workers. Saying that there is the possibility that so far down the line they might find that they are in the wrong job. The whole careers thing is full of uncertainties. I do feel for them.

  6. Yes times have changed it's such a shame and it is soul destroying to think how much time, money and effort it takes in getting a degree with no guarantee of a job at the end of it, the system is all wrong. Good luck to Amber I hope that she's successful. Have a great Easter. xx

  10. It is remarkable how hard it can be for young people to get started these days. Many jobs pay next to nothing, and housing is so ridiculously expensive. A changed world, indeed.

  11. Here in the United States jobs are a dime a dozen. Employers of Fortune 500 companies can't find enough workers to fill the slots available. I hope your granddaughter finds work soon. I will pray for her. ~Andrea xoxo

  12. Our generation lived through the easiest time ever as far as finding a job, I think. Anyone from the 1980s and later had a much harder time. Amber, I wish you all the best. It can be depressing to be in this situation but one thing I'd recommend is to make sure you invest energy into activities outside of work so that you have a life beyond what whatever your job is at any time. Those things can bring you a sense of accomplishment, joy, and continuity, regardless of what work you are doing.

  13. I remember the days when you just bought the paper and had your pick of jobs too! My three were very lucky and got jobs in their chosen path to go to right out of uni, although I know it is a struggle for a lot lo kids, there are not the jobs around like when we were young.. Hope she finds something soon
