MY FRIEND SIRI

Now that I am on my own the thought of falling and there being nobody to help looms into my mind.

I know the kids are always there for me but they live some distance away and although I have a loud voice I couldn't project it that far, lol

So I have bought my self a pouch to hold my mobile phone that I can carry it around without any problem and if I should fall and not be able to get up ( I won't, that's a fact ) I can yell 'Hey Siri' and ask her to call either Penny or Matt and get help.

I remember Tom's Mum fell in the bathroom and unfortunately was found the next day, had she had something like Siri she could have had help and not died, sadly there wasn't anything like that then.

I  would really rather not have it on all the time as we hear snippets on the media that these things are listening to us all of the time, but I don't think they will get any secret information from me, maybe a few swear words, lol

Anyone else use it for this purpose?

Briony

  1. I somewhat understand how you feel. I have Bob but he can't hear from another room or even in the same room. last Month when I was in bed and could not get up from a pulled muscle, I asked him to hand me the whistle that I bought to wear when hurricanes come, to call for help if needed. I blew that whistle until I could not blow anymore and he could not hear it over the tv, in the bedroom he could hear it. I think this is a good idea to where it. here for a FEE per month, they give a necklace to wear that one can call for help, but it is more money than i could afford. if you had the money an apple watch would be perfect, just where it 24/7 and ask Siri to call for help... the bag is cute and should work for now.

  2. I have the same concerns as I live alone in a flat. Since there are quite a few of us in the same boat here I am trying to get the administrator to set up a daily check-in system for us. I haven´t heard back so far but am still hopeful.

  3. Sounds very sensible. Hopefully you will never need it.

  4. Getting older does come with problems, you are very sensible to be thinking of these things.

  5. I remember ads for those LifeLink devices, like personal alarms -- but I guess a phone does it all now, doesn't it?

  6. Having your phone close by is security... and sensible. My son once gave me a wrist attachment that sent a message to your kids if you fell... mine said "GraGra down!" We laughed over that as that is what my youngest granddaughter called me. Luckily I've never had to use it.

  7. New to reading your blog.
The pouch for your phone is a very good idea. I like to keep my phone near for reasons of advancing age but that means holding it or popping it near me - and then forgetting it!

  9. This is a great idea! Where did you buy it? The Life alert ones cost a monthly fee.

  10. Being alone now, I have the same thoughts of something happening and no-one will know to come help me. I never thought of doing that though. That's a great idea.

  11. So sensible - however, my good friend had a terrible experience and I'm not sure the phone would have helped - she somehow overbalanced in her bathroom and fell into the bath. She has mobility problems and didn't have the strength in her arms to push herself up. It was during the night, cold and dark and she lay there calling out until almost midday the next day, then a neighbour who came with her magazine for her couldn't get an answer and shouted through the letter box - when she told him where she was he managed to get a key (she'd given one to her other neighbour) and got help for her. Hospital, physical damage to her back and after effects of a freezing night without covers. She was quite traumatized afterwards - she now wears an alarm thingy even in the shower etc. She wouldn't have taken her phone into the bathroom in the middle of the night. Just a thought Briony. Stay safe, Elaine

  12. Now you just have to remember to have the pouch with you everywhere - even the bathroom. F is starting to forget to pick things up off the bedside table when she gets up in the morning and ... well... you know. Can't find the glasses to find the things she has misplaced...

  15. Good idea. My mother didn't have any sort of device when she fell in the bathroom. This was more than 20 years ago and she was 97 and still living independently. Fortunately, I used to go and see her every day after work and found her. My mother-in-law didn't have an alarm, either, and she fell in her garden when she was 92. Luckily, someone heard her calling for help. It is a worry but there are so many aids to help now.

  16. Re the story about the lady in the bath..... when my Mum was in her 90s and living alone, she had a sensor under the mattress that sent a message to a central office ( same place as her " lifeline" gadget round her neck that she didn't wear in bed). If she was out of bed for a certain length of time ( could be set for various times) it sent a message. On the occasion that she had moved to the other side of the double bed because it was wet ( it happens!) she was surprised to find 2 paramedics beside her some time later in the night!
