THE WONDERS OF FACEBOOK

Generally speaking I am not a fan of Facebook.

I dabble here and there but Tom is always laughing at something or other or showing me anything that he thinks is relevant.

He has a site that he is often on of the place where he was born and grew up and the other night he asked me if I had a relative called Alfred Brown who lived there as  someone had posted a picture of him with his Grand daughter.

When I looked I was surprised to see my Uncle Alf who was my Dad's brother and so I wrote a message to this person called Jen.

Well, a can of worms was opened and it turned out that she was a relative and had some old photos of my Grandad and his sons, my uncles that she could send to me.

Thus, her Grandad is my Uncle because my Dad was a very late baby as can be seen in the picture.

There is my Dad with the dog I remember him calling Nipper with her Grandad third from left.

I don't know why but I got all emotional when I saw this photo and just thought what a good looking bunch they were, although my Dad doesn't look that good does he, lol

I reckon that his photo was taken round about 1915.

I have had several email conversations with this lady and she is going to rake out some more photo's to send to me, can't wait.

  3. Oh how wonderful. I do use Facebook to keep in touch with family but my account is private so I do not share much. Your experience shows the positive side of social media. Great photos x

  4. I never thought of finding something like this on FB, this is amazing and they are all really handsome men, that is what I thought when I first looked at it. I am sure your granddad grew up to be as handsome as they. I dislike FB and try not to spend much time on it... this is fantastic. small world and of course my favorite in the photo is the DOG

  5. Nobody is laughing in that studio picture. Mind you, it was taken in the middle of The Great War if your estimation is correct. Great connection. Family history is nearly always fascinating.

    1. People in old photos didn't smile much -- I suspect because they often had bad teeth. (Maybe not in this case!)

  7. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! Popped in for a visit from a mutual friends blog. It's always nice to meet more blog mates. FB gets a bad wrap from my perspective. It's a tool and many really good things happen there. Unfortunately people complain about it due to the politics, which is heavy duty right now; but putting that aside it can be really wonderful. I had a very similar thing happen due to a picture. I love history, and genealogy and used to belong to group on FB that was about the small town I grew up in. I posted a picture of something we were discussing and another member asked how I happened to have a picture of her uncle. Her Aunt and Uncle were friends of my parents and the picture I posted was them playing cards. Turns out this person's cousin was a childhood friend of mine. We connected and have stayed connected now for about 10 years. It was awesome. I was able to locate all my childhood friends who lived within a radious of a couple of blocks and we chat almost daily via FB because we are all scattered across the country. Truly great fun. Last fall I celebrated my 50th class reunion and was the person in charge of finding classmates........a HUGE job, and Facebook was a tremendous help. I'm thrilled for you with getting to see and receive pictures and totally understand why you would be emotional. I would be as well. One of my Great Grandfather's brothers was a professional photographer back in the day and none of the pictures show people smiling. No one did, they weren't suppose to in photo's I was told by an historian. Please swing by for a visit, as I said, love meeting new blog mates.

  8. How cool! It's great to make such a connection, especially via Facebook, which is usually full of silly cat videos and political propaganda. LOL! I love the photo of your male ancestors, but yeah, your dad doesn't seem very happy to be there.

  9. How lovely to make this connection on Facebook. I've never used it myself, though I did join Instagram last year. It just shows how it can be used for the good though, putting long lost relatives in touch with each other in this way. The photos are wonderful, how lovely to be able to add them to your collection.

  11. That's wonderful. I felt the same when I saw the photo of my grandfather's shop for the first time a few weeks ago. My grandfather and great grandfather were standing outside it. Both died long before I came along. Arilx

  16. This shows the best side of facebook and what it can be useful for. It's wonderful to find family you didn't know you had and to receive such super photos as well, I would have got emotional too especially when you see the date of 1915. Love the name of the dog, same name as the 'His Master's Voice' dog:)
